The Washington-Orange-Lamoille Labor Council, AFL-CIO, is the central body of labor organizations in north-central Vermont. United, we are a voice for the interests and needs of working people in Vermont. We are affiliated with the national AFL-CIO, the central labor organization in the United States, representing more than 13 million working people. We are also affiliated with the Vermont State Labor Council, the central labor body in our state. Together, we are the single largest member-based organization in the nation.
The CORE RESPONSIBILITIES of the Washington-Orange-Lamoille Labor Council are to:
assist workers
and their unions in the struggle for social and economic justice;
mobilize current
and retired members to get involved with their union and their community;
support efforts
to organize and bargain fair contracts;
lobby, endorse
and hold candidates accountable by involving working people in the political
process;
advocate and
support laws that protect working people;
educate members
and allies with the AFL-CIO's
An Economy That
Works for All Program and
public forums;
and unite with
community allies who are also struggling for justice.
Our Labor Council
generally meets the third Thursday of every month. Each Council-affiliated organization
elects delegates to the Labor Council as representatives of their union, giving
their union's members a voice within the Council. Delegates are an important
source of information for their locals concerning Council activities. Worker-supportive
religious and community based organizations are more than welcome to participate
in Council functions.The President is the principal officer and volunteer staff
person of the Council. Our current Executive Board is:

Labor Council Meeting
April 15th, 6:15 pm, Community Rm., Montpelier police station
Working Vermont - a coalition of Vermont’s labor unions, including the Vermont AFL-CIO - has examined Governor Douglas’ claims and Vermont’s reality. We think Vermonters deserve facts over rhetoric, for example:
Douglas has spent $200 million on economic development but has failed to create anywhere near the number of jobs he claims
We’ve lost 2,700 private sector jobs since Nov. 2006, so it’s not just the current downturn with its awful unemployment rate that’s at fault.
Over one-third of all new private sector jobs pay less than $18,000.
Jim = Jobs is just a slogan.
The truth is, Jim = HIS job.
The Central Labor Council's
