BREAKING NEWS: Winooski teachers reach a tentative agreement, strike averted!

Winooski teachers and board reached a tentative agreement in the middle of the night (early this morning) averting a strike.

Teachers in Winooski, members of the Vermont NEA, had entered their third year without a negotiated contract and had been the lowest paid teachers in Chittenden County. Last week the teachers voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike after having a week of informational pickets in their efforts to push the School Board to come back to the table to negotiate.

Teachers in Winooski, members of the Vermont NEA, have now entered their third year without a negotiated contract. The 2008-2009 school year ended with imposed working conditions by the school board. In August, the school board voted to impose working conditions again for the 2009-2010 school year and now teachers enter the 2010-2011 school year with no negotiated contract.


Incredible turnout for Bernie Sanders Events in Southern VT

This weekend the Vermont Workers' Center Healthcare is a Human Right Campaign participated in 7 Southern Vermont Town Hall Meetings with Senator Bernie Sanders. Well over 1,000 people participated in the events in Bennington, West Dover, Bellows Falls, Putney, Westminster, Springfield and Woodstock. Local members of the Vermont Workers' Center spoke about the Healthcare is a Human Right Campaign on the panel alongside Bernie at each event.
