COLCHESTER - Tuesday evening at the Vermont Workers’ Center’s second Chittenden County People’s Forum on Healthcare held at St. Michael's College, Senator Doug Racine, chair of the Senate’s health and welfare committee, announced that his committee will begin holding hearings on S.88, the bill that, with its House companion, H.100, will put Vermont on the road to enacting healthcare as a human right.

Care For All: Musicians Produce Benefit Recording


Producer and Blues singer/guitarist Scott Ainslie pulled together nine other musicians, and a Grammy award-winning engineer and studio, for a music compilation in support of a Vermont campaign to establish healthcare as a human right rather than a commercial commodity, a public good rather than an economic privilege. Vermont’s Independent Senator Bernie Sanders even turns up in a track.

Forum rallies support for single-payer care

BENNINGTON -- Several panelists spoke in favor of a single-payer health care system at a health care forum Thursday night, but significant barriers remain to achieving that goal.

The forum, organized by the Vermont Workers Centers, was meant to rally support for pushing state officials toward a single-payer system in Vermont. The center is seeking action in the upcoming legislative session on House and Senate bills that call for such a system.

This forum with local state legislators will explore the how Vermont can establish healthcare as a basic human right and win single-payer healthcare in 2010. It is being organized by the Franklin/Grand Isle County Organizing Committee of the Healthcare Is a Human Right Campaign, a project of the Vermont Workers' Center that seeks to change what is politically possible in healthcare reform efforts through grassroots organizing.

Don't Let the Douglas Administration Dump on Unemployed Vermonters

The number of Vermonters forced into unemployment by the global economic crisis has put a strain on the State's unemployment insurance fund. To address this problem, the Douglas administration has proposed cutting the amount of money that unemployed Vermonters will receive while they are out of work. The governor calls this a "balanced" approach to dealing with the problem. We call it heartless and inhumane.

This week the health care reform bill, HR 3926, will be brought to the floor of the US House of Representatives for debate ( The bill does not include the amendment by Rep. Kucinich that would have eased the way for states to implement single payer programs, nor does it appear that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will keep her promise to allow a floor vote on an amendment by Rep.

Rutland Healthcare Organizing Committee Marches in Halloween Parade

DSCF6710_0_0.JPGOn October 31st The Rutland Healthcare is a Human Right Organizing Committee marched in the 50th Annual Rutland Halloween Parade. Though it was raining hard, the committee members dressed as "Insurance Company Vampires", patients, doctors and nurses marched chanting "Our health is not for profit" and "Hey hey, ho ho, Insurance Companies have got to go!". They received cheers of support from the massive crowd.
