Join us on Saturday, May 30th to protest health insurance rate hikes and call on Governor Scott to expand Medicaid to everyone in Vermont, regardless of income or immigration status.
When: Saturday, May 30th, 12pm
Where: Meet at the Berlin Park & Ride on Pike Drive in Berlin. Caravan ends in downtown Montpelier.
We’ll start at the Berlin Park & Ride, hear speakers at the Blue Cross headquarters and Governor Scott's office in Montpelier, and end at a nearby parking lot for a socially distanced free meal by the People’s Kitchen. The entire way, people will be able to stay in their vehicles and listen to a Zoom call with a program of speeches and music.
The battle for Medicaid is emerging as a key front of struggle for the poor and working class amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Millions of people have joined the ranks of those on Medicaid, while politicians are imposing cuts, hurdles, and exclusions to the program as they move to dismantle it outright.
Meanwhile, the cost of private health insurance continues to rise. On May 8th, 2020 Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont proposed an average increase of 6.3 percent for next year’s Vermont Health Connect premiums -- which, if approved, would represent a total increase of 55 percent in just seven years, at the same time that copays and deductibles have skyrocketed.
